A few days after unfortunately announcing his withdrawal from the singles competition due to a recent back surgery, Andy Murray made a surprise announcement this morning. He received a wildcard from the Wimbledon organizers to participate in the mixed doubles tournament with Emma Raducanu.
Already set to compete with his brother Jamie in the men's doubles tournament, this is a small consolation for the British fans. This is likely Murray's final appearance at Wimbledon, which he won in 2013 and 2016. At least he will give fans two chances to make the Centre Court roof explode one last time.
Andy Murray has rarely participated in mixed doubles tournaments during Grand Slams in his career; this will be only the fourth time. Here are his other participations:
Wimbledon 2005 with Shahar Peer - first round loss
Wimbledon 2006 with Kristen Flipkens - second round loss
Wimbledon 2019 with Serena Williams - third round loss
If the trend continues, Andy Murray should reach the quarterfinals this year with Emma Raducanu!
Let's hope he can give us a few last good performances in his final Wimbledon despite his back injury. He will be in action tomorrow (Thursday) on Centre Court in men's doubles. Go Sir Andy!
