Shuai Zhang suffers an 18th straight loss

Shuai Zhang suffers another loss

Source : Yahoo Sports

She establishes a new WTA record

The Chinese player Shuai Zhang set a new unenviable mark by losing 7-5, 2-6, 0-6 to the Japanese qualifier Mai Hontama in the first round of Indian Wells. The precedent record, held by the American Sandy Collins, was 17 straight losses.

Zhang's last win came more than a year ago at the Open 6e Sens that was played in Lyon in February 2023. While she's now 713 in the WTA rankings, she was 23rd at the time. She lost in the second round of the event after a nice performance a few weeks earlier at the Australian Open where she reached the 4th round.

We wish her that this sequence comes to an end in two weeks in Miami, she's getting dangerously close to the all-time record owned by the American Vince Spadea, who lost 21 consecutive matches.
